International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8th, provides a global platform to recognise the achievements of women while calling for urgent action towards gender equality.

The theme for 2025, "March Forward For ALL Women and Girls," highlights the urgency of addressing issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and combating violence against women. Despite progress, significant challenges remain.

The statistics are sobering:

• Violence Against Women: Across the globe, 30% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence.
• Employment Barriers: More than 2.7 billion women face legal restrictions on their choice of jobs compared to men.
• Gender Pay Gap in Australia: Women in Australia earn, on average, 13.3% less than men.

These inequalities underline the need for continued advocacy and actionable change to create a fairer, more inclusive world.

Jac Westin, owner of Full Throttle Mechanics, highlights the importance of perseverance in the industry. "I wouldn’t take no for an answer when I started my journey in the automotive industry. When I wanted to do work experience as a mechanic, they tried to push me toward a female-dominated field like hairdressing. But I stuck to my guns because I loved it so much, and I kept pushing until I got what I wanted. No matter your gender, you can achieve your goals if you love something wholeheartedly and want it badly enough."
