International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8th, provides a global platform to recognise the achievements of women while calling for urgent action towards gender equality.
The theme for 2025, "March Forward For ALL Women and Girls," highlights the urgency of addressing issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and combating violence against women. Despite progress, significant challenges remain.
Gender Equality Challenges Persist
The statistics are sobering:
- Violence Against Women: Across the globe, 30% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence.
- Employment Barriers: More than 2.7 billion women face legal restrictions on their choice of jobs compared to men.
- Gender Pay Gap in Australia: Women in Australia earn, on average, 13.3% less than men.
These inequalities underline the need for continued advocacy and actionable change to create a fairer, more inclusive world.
Women Driving Change in Australia’s Automotive Industry
Australia’s automotive industry has long been seen as male-dominated. But over the years, women have proven they are more than capable of excelling in every corner of this sector. From mechanics and business owners to workshop managers and industry leaders, women are breaking stereotypes and inspiring the next generation to follow their passion.
Organisations like Women in Automotive (WinA) have played an instrumental role since 1999, empowering women across all levels of the trade. Through initiatives like networking events, skills seminars, and work placements, WinA continues to foster a culture of inclusivity.
AutoGuru is proud to highlight the incredible women shaping the automotive industry, including the many women-owned businesses and skilled female mechanics operating within workshops on our platform.
Fume Garage – Pioneers of Female Excellence
A shining example of women thriving in the automotive industry is Fume Garage, a standout workshop located in Meadowbrook, Queensland, led by the talented Mariah and her exceptional all-female team.
Fume Garage is making a name for itself not only through its high-quality services but also as a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated field. Owned and operated entirely by women, this innovative workshop brings a fresh approach to the industry, championing customer empowerment and prioritising clear, honest communication at every step.
Mariah, the leader behind Fume Garage, shared her perspective on breaking into the automotive industry:
"Breaking into a male-dominated industry as a successful woman can be quite the journey. It's definitely scary at first, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Equality is key to creating a level playing field and promoting diversity in all fields. You need to remember to stay true to yourself, trust in your abilities, and never compromise your values. Surround yourself with people who support diversity and inclusion, and remember that your unique perspective is a valuable asset — don't settle for anything less than that.
For aspiring female mechanics, my advice is simple: follow your passion with determination and don't let anything hold you back. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and try to build a supportive network. Stay curious, keep honing your skills, and don't hesitate to speak up and share your ideas. Your perspective and skills as a woman bring so much value to this industry. With resilience, determination, and expertise, you'll carve out a successful career in this exciting and fulfilling industry."
Fume Garage has achieved remarkable recognition, earning the title of AutoGuru’s #1 Top Mechanic in Australia in 2024 and #1 in Logan City in 2025. Renowned for their exceptional service and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction, the team has built a strong reputation for trust, reliability, and a customer-first approach.
Their customer reviews say it all, highlighting the exceptional service that Fume Garage consistently delivers.
In August 2024, one satisfied customer, Kim, shared this 5-star review, “I love that it's operated by women. Most thorough service I've had as other people who have serviced my car haven't picked up on most things this company has”.
Mariah and her team showcase how women can not only participate in the automotive industry but also lead, innovate, and excel.

Empowering Through Innovation
AutoGuru demonstrates its commitment to empowering women in the automotive industry by supporting women-led workshops helping them thrive in a competitive market, and providing an easy way for female drivers to confidently book car servicing and repairs.
In December, Amelia shared her experience using AutoGuru, “As a young female who is clueless when it comes to cars and had a father who always handled any car issues, I’ve always had the worry of being overcharged for things I didn’t need since I moved… I will definitely be coming back for all my car needs.”
AutoGuru is proud to foster a workplace that values gender diversity. Women make up 33% of the team, including 31% of all managers. Additionally, 11% of the tech team is female, showcasing our ongoing commitment to improving representation in traditionally male-dominated fields. Through these efforts, AutoGuru continues to lead by example, creating opportunities and a supportive environment for women in the automotive and tech industries.
Careers for Women in Automotive
The automotive industry offers a wealth of opportunities for women who may never have considered it. Whether as mechanics, service advisors, workshop managers, or specialists in emerging automotive technologies, the possibilities are vast.
Fiona Blackburne, the owner and operator of Southeast Auto Mechanical and recipient of the prestigious MTAQ Women in Industry Award 2021, shares her insights:
"It’s exciting to see more women pursuing careers in mechanics! To succeed in this field, focus on the following.
Gain Technical Knowledge & Experience: Don’t be afraid to tackle complex tasks. Confidence comes with practice.
Find Mentorship & Build a Network: Seek mentors and connect with supportive peers. Organisations like MTAQ, Auto Women, and NAWIC offer networking opportunities.

Steps to Becoming a Mechanic in Australia
The automotive industry offers a variety of trade specialties to explore, including panel beating, automotive electrics, vehicle trimming, diesel mechanics, vehicle body building, and vehicle painting. With so many options, you can choose a career path that aligns perfectly with your interests and skills.
As demand for skilled auto technicians continues to rise, pursuing a career in this field promises stability and growth. Programs like Women in Automotive are also breaking barriers, providing women with resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities to thrive in this industry.
Whether you're passionate about working on engines, electrical systems, or bodywork, the automotive trade offers a fulfilling and secure future.
Addressing Challenges
Jac Westin, owner of Full Throttle Mechanics, highlights the importance of perseverance in the industry. "I wouldn’t take no for an answer when I started my journey in the automotive industry. When I wanted to do work experience as a mechanic, they tried to push me toward a female-dominated field like hairdressing. But I stuck to my guns because I loved it so much, and I kept pushing until I got what I wanted. No matter your gender, you can achieve your goals if you love something wholeheartedly and want it badly enough."
Organisations, along with mentors and all the incredible women working in the industry, play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for women in automotive.
Celebrating Progress and Driving Change
International Women’s Day 2025 is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of women in the automotive sector. Businesses like Fume Garage, Southeast Auto Mechanical, and Full Throttle Mechanics show that women are not only participating but thriving, within this evolving industry.
AutoGuru proudly supports these efforts by showcasing women-led workshops, advocating for gender equality, and offering the tools needed for success.
As Jac Westin perfectly puts it:
"Success in the male-dominated automotive industry requires resilience, determination, and a leadership mindset. Women often face gender biases that can lead to being underestimated or placed in less critical roles. However, being a woman does not diminish professional capabilities. Many successful women overcome stereotypes by focusing on results and building a thick skin.
Gender equality is essential for a thriving automotive industry. Women can succeed by showcasing their expertise, mentoring others, and advocating for broader change.
The industry is evolving, and those who rise above challenges are paving the way for future generations, proving success is determined by skill and perseverance, not gender."
If you’re a girl or woman with a passion for cars, problem-solving, or leadership, there has never been a better time to consider a career in automotive. The barriers are falling, the opportunities are growing, and there’s a community ready to welcome you.
Join the movement to accelerate action, inspire change, and drive forward into a future of equality and success.
