Do Brake Shoes Need to Be Replaced on Volvo's?

Some vehicles are fitted with brake shoes, they are part of the braking system and are located on the rear of modern Volvo's fitted with drum brakes.

Since they help a car slow down it's important they are working correctly and replaced when they wear out or fail.

If you ever notice an unusual noise from the brakes or a difference in the Volvo's brake pedal or the handbrake then there is a chance there may be a problem with your brake pads or brake shoes and they need to be replaced.

Brake shoes are enclosed inside a brake drum that rotates with the wheel. When you apply the Volvo's brakes the brake force pushes the brake shoes outwards against the interior of the drum to slow the motion of a vehicle. Brake drums are fitted to the rear of some vehicles, instead of brake pads and rotors. Due to less braking force on the Volvo's rear brakes, brake drums and shoes can be a less expensive alternative.

Since brake shoes are a different design from brake pads and absorb less brake force they usually have a longer service life. The type of driving you do and exposure to contaminants can increase brake wear, but no matter how careful you are it's inevitable, they will eventually need to be replaced, which is where AutoGuru comes in quite handy.
