Shuddering when Braking Inspection
How Much does a Shuddering when Braking Inspection Cost?
When the braking system on your car is working correctly, slowing down from speed is usually an uneventful process, but when there is an issue, it can be an unnerving experience!
One of the most common issues with the braking system is a vibration or shudder when applying the brakes.
This can be caused by a number of issues, most of which are simple repairs.
Common Reasons for Shudder/Vibration when Braking:
Excessive runout in brake disc rotors or drums
Depending on the style of your vehicle, your vehicle will have either brake disc rotors or brake drums.
Over time, these components can become warped due to wear or excessive heat.
When this happens, the surface is no longer flat, and when the brakes are applied, the brake pads or shoes that are forced against this warped surface transmit the uneven wear through the steering wheel or pedal.
This is felt as a shudder or vibration, which is more pronounced at higher speeds.
Loose wheel nuts
The wheels of your vehicle are held onto the hub with wheel nuts.
Depending on the style of your vehicle, each wheel will have anywhere between 3 and 6 wheel nuts attaching it to the vehicle.
If these wheel nuts are not tightened correctly, when the vehicle is in motion, it may transmit a vibration through the steering or body of the car, which will be more pronounced under braking.
What’s Involved in a Shudder/Vibration when Braking Inspection?
The mechanic will inspect all components of the braking system, including the brake pads, disc rotors, calipers and cylinders and determine the cause of the shudder/vibration, and provide a detailed quote of necessary repairs required.
Usually there will be visual signs of what is causing the issue, but if there isn’t, the suspension will also be inspected.
How Important is this Inspection?
The braking system is the most critical safety feature on your vehicle, so it is important to make sure it is in correct working order to protect you and your family, as well as other motorists on the road.
While a shudder or vibration may not affect the stopping performance of your vehicle, it may be hiding a more sinister issue within your vehicle, so having it inspected as soon as you notice a difference is recommended.
