Most transmission oils get replaced at specified service intervals. If you're unsure if it has been replaced, most automatic transmissions have dipsticks where you can check the level and condition of the oil.
The oil should be reddish in colour and the darker the colour of the oil the more likely your Ford Mondeo's transmission oil needs replacing.
Some manufactures don’t have dipsticks to limit customers from checking/replacing their own oil. In this case, it's better to let someone qualified check it out as it could involve a lengthier process.
There are also some manufactures that require little to no servicing of the transmission throughout the life of the vehicle.
With manual transmissions, the oil is a gold colour but the same principle applies in that the darker the oil the more likely it needs replacing.
Automatic transmission fluid replacements generally involve draining the oil, removing the transmission pan, replacing the filter (if required) and pan gasket, refilling the transmission initially and then running the transmission through the gears and then rechecking the levels, some manufacturers differ from this process so its best to check with your local workshop.
Manual transmissions usually have a drain plug and a filler plug. The drain plug is removed and the oil is drained and the plug is put back in, the filler plug is then removed and new oil is added until oil starts to overflow from the filler hole when that happens it's full and the filler hole is plugged back up.

On October 18th, I brought my Nissan Navara to Rapid Tune Hallam due to a rattling noise coming from the front of the engine, around the fuel pump area. I explained to the staff that the noise only appears when the engine is at operating temperature, which led me to suspect an issue with a tensioner or possible low oil pressure affecting the timing chain. I also mentioned that the timing chain was replaced about five months ago, making it a point of concern for me. The work had been done in New South Wales, and I didn’t want to risk chain failure by driving back there. After an initial diagnosis, I was told the fuel pump was the problem and received a quote of AUD 1,800 for a reconditioned pump, with the total cost estimated at AUD 2,850. I picked up the vehicle on October 25th, after being assured it was “running like a dream.” However, within 20 minutes of driving, I noticed that the rattling noise persisted. I returned the vehicle on October 28th and, two days later, was informed that everything was fine and that the vehicle was safe to drive. Since this is our family car and we frequently travel with our 4-month-old baby, I insisted they investigate further and resolve the issue that had brought me in initially. A timing chain failure on a Navara could lead to a catastrophic engine failure, and I was not willing to take that risk. Despite being told that their "high-tech scanning tools" would detect a slack chain, I knew this was incorrect, as diagnosing chain slack requires removing the chain cover. After three days without updates, I called on November 2nd and spoke with the head technician, who informed me that they had, at last, removed the chain cover and discovered that the upper chain tensioner was not functioning properly. On November 7th, I received a call stating that they could install a new tensioner and that the vehicle would be ready that day. However, I was quoted an additional AUD 780 for this service, including AUD 500 for the part alone—a price significantly higher than the genuine Nissan part I could source for under AUD 100. By this stage, I was exhausted with the process. It was my birthday, and I just wanted my car back in working condition. I arranged a ride to the shop, expecting to pick up my car as promised. However, by 5:10 p.m., I still hadn’t received an update. When I arrived, I saw my vehicle being driven out, only to find it back in the workshop with the hood open 15 minutes later. The staff then told me it was ready and that the rattle was gone after a short test drive (approximately 10 minutes). Yet, after driving for just 20 minutes, the rattling noise was louder than ever, and the driver’s door speaker was now no longer working, the 4wd light on the dash on, and the driver's door speaker isn't working anymore. After contacting Rapid Tune on Friday to let them know about the situation, I was told to bring the car again on the 11th of November. The front desk employee was actually disrespectful and told me the problem most likely comes from the chain, which I had stated from the start. I was then told they wouldn't have time for that repair for an other month. This experience has been incredibly stressful and frustrating. I feel misled, poorly informed, and charged over AUD 3,500 without the initial issue being resolved. I hope Rapid Tune will take responsibility and resolve this matter. I expected better quality of service from a trusted, reputable brand like Rapid Tune and am now left feeling very disappointed.
